I have a ton of respect for Lord Nelson and would consider him one of the greatest naval commanders of all time but Yi Sun-Shin is in a different league entirely, he is a contender for being called the greatest military leader of all time.
Yes he ranks up there with Alexander, Napoleon and Subutai.
The Battle of Myeongnyang was a true masterstroke But in my opinion what sets him apart from other famous leaders is that he could fight and win at all levels of command.
You could give him 10 guys with spears and he always won, you could give him 100 cavalry and he always won, you could give him a 1000 militiamen with professional archers and a company of unruly noble horsemen and he always won. Send him into the mountains, he won. Send him down the rivers, he won. Give him mountain men, but him on boats down a river to engage professional sailors and he still all ways won!
Now Nelson was no slouch either, why he was best known for the big fleet on fleet action at Trafalgar he also knew how to handle a sloop too. But the fact his he got his but handed to him during his ill fated attack at Santa Cruz de Tenerife but I got to hand it to the man, he was nearly mortally wounded while personally leading a daring amphibious assault.
